Server & Storage Infrastructure
The HPE ProLiant lineup and iLO, StoreOnce/MSA/Nimble/Primera, RAID, SAN vs NAS vs DAS, and capacity planning.
Compute: HPE ProLiant and iLO
The HPE ProLiant family spans entry-level to mission-critical compute, with Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) providing out-of-band management — remote power control, virtual media, and health telemetry independent of the operating system. iLO is what makes lights-out, remote-hands operations practical at scale.
Storage tiers
- MSA — cost-effective entry SAN storage for general workloads.
- Nimble — predictive flash arrays with InfoSight analytics for proactive issue avoidance.
- Primera — mission-critical storage with extreme availability guarantees.
- StoreOnce — purpose-built backup appliances with high-ratio deduplication.
RAID and the SAN / NAS / DAS choice
RAID levels trade capacity, performance, and resilience — RAID 1/10 for performance-critical databases, RAID 5/6 for capacity-oriented workloads. The access model matters just as much: DAS for simple local performance, NAS for shared file access, and SAN for high-performance, block-level storage that virtualization and databases depend on.
Capacity planning
Good capacity planning is forward-looking: model growth from real telemetry, leave deliberate headroom, and refresh on a planned cadence. The goal is to never be surprised — neither by a full array at 2 a.m. nor by an over-provisioned estate quietly burning capital.
